What types of manuscripts do I edit?

I have a background in editing both fiction and nonfiction, including novels, short stories, poetry, essays, articles, book reviews, and more. If there is something I have not listed, feel free to email and ask me about it.

Think about it: What level of editing do you require?

Copy-editing: I check for punctuation, grammar, and proper word usage. I may also ensure that everything is consistent throughout, create a style sheet to aid in checking for consistency, and review with the intended audience in mind.

Substantive Editing: More in-depth than copyediting and proofreading, substantive editing delves more into consistency.

Developmental Editing: Often, developmental editing begins with a very rough draft, and I help the author by working closely with him or her and suggesting large modifications to improve the flow. I help the author as they continue to polish the manuscript, and I usually review it once or twice after the initial edit. Suggestions concerning modifications can include any of the following: the presentation of the work as a whole, organization, the content of the novel or non-fiction work, and more. Developmental editing often requires some rewriting. In the case of non-fiction, it may include research to verify facts.

Non-Fiction and Fact Checking

When editing Non-Fiction, I check for a number of things, including:

Consistency: Are you staying on track with your thesis?

How each idea flows into the next: Is there a natural progression of thought?

Contradictions: Did you state one fact in the beginning of the article, yet contradict it further into the piece?

As a fact-checker and editor, I have a sharp eye for inconsistencies and will be able to help you verify information, if need be. I have particular expertise and interest in non-fiction categories such as spirituality, New Age, metaphysical, religion (primarily alternative faiths), history, automotive mechanics, automotive computers, the automotive industry, writing, the publishing process, editing, libraries, retail, the natural world, outdoors, fitness, running, hiking, and travel. If there is a particular subject that I have not listed here, feel free to ask me about it.

Let’s discuss what needs to be done with your manuscript.

Your name and contact information, a brief blurb about the book, and what you hope to accomplish. From there, we can discuss what type of editing you require, and once I review your sample, I will be able to provide a price quote.

Disclaimer: I love helping authors prepare their work for publication. However, I make no claims that I can guarantee publication. I can help you make your work the best that it can be, but I cannot promise you that you will be accepted by a publisher. I wish I could!
