The Disenchanted Pet, by Kate Policani, is a very interesting and riveting account of a young woman’s life in Earth’s future. The ShaZha is an alien race that came to Earth to “save” the human race from themselves. At least, this is what people are led to believe. Writing from a young lady’s point of view, Ms. Policani draws the reader into a future where humans are the “pets” of another race, where few are allowed to read books, and people must get permission from their keepers to socialize.
I didn’t know the plot of this novel when I first picked it up, so I didn’t know what to expect. The story was very well done. It’s not your typical run-of-the-mill science fiction novel, and that’s what I like about it. It was both thought-provoking and original. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down!
My only disappointments with the book was that it was too short, and it could have used some extra proof-reading. Despite this, I was able to lose myself in the story. The Disenchanted Pet gave me the impression that it was the first in a series, and I definitely want to see more from this author. For a light, imaginative read, get yourself a copy. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
